First 10k run for Bladder Cancer!
My first 10k run - for Bladder Cancer!
My Story
Hi, my name is Karen Arthur and I am running my first 10k in Regents Park this April (with my eldest daugher Kareem and my good friend Sharon) to raise money for Fight Bladder Cancer UK.
Just four years ago I didn't know much about Bladder cancer. Then, just after we all came out of the 2nd (or possibly 3rd) lockdown in late 2020 my younger brother, William, a fit and healthy non-smoker in his late fifties, whose 2nd home was in the gym, was diagnosed with Bladder cancer. What began as a routine visit to the doctor with possible signs of dehydration ended up in his diagnosis. Everyone was surprised. We became very invested in finding out about it and Williams recovery. My brother had to deal with his diagnosis and treatment alone as, thanks to a global pandemic that wouldnt quit, family and friends were isolating and miles away. It was an extremely lonely time for him as well as worrying for us all.
After two operations and treatments doctors hoped that they'd caught it all but, a few years later my brothers cancer unfortunately reappeared in sites where it could spread. It felt like he was back to square one and lacked control of an uncontrollable situation. Cue more operations and the most difficult decision of his life. Williams most recent operation was on Christmas eve eve to have his bladder and prostrate removed and a stoma fitted. Although there are still more tests to be done, William is recovering well and we hope he will be back at his favourite place, the gym, in time and with appropriate care and attention.
Listennnn. I can barely finish a 5k run although I do attempt a Park run/walk locally most Saturday mornings. I am committed to training for and completing this 10k run on April 6th to raise money for Fight Bladder Cancer UK much needed research and do a little something for my little brother. When l'm staggering along the road questioning my life decisions and gasping for breath, thinking of my brother and what he's experienced helps me put one foot in front of the other. Let's go!
Fun fact: I'm 63 the following week so it's my birthday challenge too!
If you've managed to read this far..THANK YOU! It would mean the world to me and William if you could spare some cash to help reach my target and share amongst your social networks. xxx
